Everyone keeps saying AI is going to change everything. But almost nobody actually knows how it works — which is kind of insane. So this week, we look under the hood. By the end, you'll understand it better than most adults. Come on.
What this is
This isn't a website you read in five minutes. It's a short course on how AI actually works — built for you, for this week, and for whenever you're curious after.
Wander it. Jump around. There's no test.
It's split into chapters — the menu on the left. Each one starts simple, then lets you go further if you want.
Read the top of a section to get the idea. Tap “Go deeper” when you want the real mechanics, and “the deep end” when you really want to know.
How deep do you want to go?
Every section has three layers:

One clear paragraph. The whole idea, fast.
Go deeper
The how and the why, once you're curious.
The deep end
The real mechanics. As far as it goes.
Stop on any step. All three count as getting it.
- The gist — one or two plain sentences. Enough to get it.
- Go deeper — the real mechanics — how it actually works.
- The deep end — for when you can't stop. The stuff most adults never learn.
- Read every layer of one section, or skim the whole thing first and come back — both work.
Apocaloptimist
That's the word for the week. It means: take AI's real risks seriously, and stay hopeful about what we can build with it. Neither doom nor hype.
There's a whole film about it (your guide will show you). The idea underneath: this technology is powerful enough to be worth understanding properly — so that you're in charge of it, not the other way around.
The one rule
Whatever it tells you, check it. You're the editor, not the audience.
You'll understand exactly why in the next chapter. For now: an AI sounds just as confident when it's wrong as when it's right. Your own judgment is the thing that matters most.
